HAnano Bone is a patent pending bone substitute material based on a polymeric matrix and nano crystalline hydroxyapatite (HA) particles with high surface area. When placed in the human body, the polymer will be gradually resorbed accompanied by the formation of new bone due to the osteoinductive properties of HA. The figure on the upper right shows a bone cell attached to the HAnano Bone Surface. The unique composition of HAnano Bone allows facile handling and mouldability over extended periods of time. Upon hardening, the process proceeds without heat exertion, which prevents necrosis of surrounding tissue. Hardening results in a material with a compressive strength comparable to cancellous (trabecular) bone. HAnano Bone displays excellent wettability with contact angles of less than 10 degrees. A highly hydrophilic surface is of great importance due to the ability to promote cellular adhesion, which in turn is beneficial for osseointegration. The picture on the upper right show a bone cell attached to the HAnano Bone surface. The compatibility and osteoconductive properties of HAnano Bone have been assessed and evaluated in both in vitro and in vivo studies, showing enhanced cell viability compared to commercial grade titanium as well as absence of toxic and inflammatory response. The picture on the lower right presents results from an osteoblast in vitro study. The results show that HAnano Bone has 42 % better cell viability than titanium. HAnano Bone presents several attractive properties which can be utilized in numerous applications such as spine, trauma, oral and maxillofacial reconstruction.
